Identity Fraud – Lose Your Drivers License? Report it to the credit bureaus

If you ever lost your drivers license then you know just how much of a headache it can be. Losing your ID is much more than just another inconvenient trip to the DMV. The consequences could be disastrous as you are now a potential target of identity theft fraud.

Upon losing your license you should notify the authorities and file a police report so that they can possible catch anyone who is trying to use your ID in an fraudulent manner. In addition to notifying authorities is a good idea that you also contact the 3 credit bureaus, TransUnion, Experian and Equifax, so that they can monitor your reports for any fraudulent activities.

The reasons why you would want to report your lost drivers license to the credit bureaus is so that you can have an extra set of eyes, or three extra sets in this case, watching your personal credit history making sure that no new unauthorized accounts are opened in your name. Your credit history plays a large role in your everyday financial life. Once your credit history starts to deteriorate so might your chances of securing a mortgage, car loan and even a job!

There are a couple ways that you can go about reporting a stolen drivers license to the credit bureaus. The first way is by contacting customer support at one of the three bureaus. When you contact support you can explain your situation and tell them that you would like to add a fraud alert to your account. This alert will raise any flags when a new account is opened in your name and you will be contacted by the credit bureaus to ensure that you in fact did open that account.
